Volunteer Activist Campaign in Peru
''Artistic Expressions''
Background
Volunteering in Peru has contributed to the development of vulnerable communities as well as to economic and social development. Volunteering in Peru comprises government institutions and civil society organisations. Civil society organisations are demanding amendments to Article 29094 of the existing legislature for the growth and development of volunteering activities. This legislature was approved by the Cabinet and passed by the National Congress for debate and approval. Unfortunately, however, political will is lacking and no priority is being given to the field of volunteering.
About this campaign
This campaign sought to raise attention of organisations involved in volunteer activities, and on the need for a modification of the current law concerning volunteer organisations in Peru. During the development of the "Artistic Expressions" campaign, volunteers provided information on the benefits of volunteering, as volunteering in Peru has contributed to the development of vulnerable communities as well as the economic and social development. The objectives of the campaign were: Getting young people and authorities to become aware of the importance and value of volunteerism file a Petition with signatures collected in the campaign, the Congress of the Republic, Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations and the municipality of Lima.
On 15 July 2014, 50 national and international volunteers participated in the campaign at the Alameda Chabuca Granda, inviting children, young people and the general population to capture through a picture or slogan their opinion of volunteering. The 50 mosaics were sewn together by volunteers into a large banner, which will be presented along with the petition to the respective authorities.
This campaign is being organised by Brigada de Voluntarios Bolivarianos del Peru and supported by Canada World Youth, Soy Lima and Metropolitan Municipality of Lima.
